Poll has National Organization for Marriage tongue-tied and confused

Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage
Last week, a poll by ABC News and the Washington Post announced that the majority of Americans actually favor gay marriage.

Naturally, this announcement has thrown the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage for a wild loop. Since the announcement of the poll's result, the organization has been scrambling to either trivialize it or claim that it was unfair.

Recently, NOM chairperson Maggie Gallagher wrote a column in National Review claiming that the poll was inaccurate.

However,  Truth Wins Out calls Gallagher out in a very good post.

The only reason why I am not devoting more time to that post is because I want more attention to be paid to how NOM President Brian Brown tried to cast doubt on the poll's credibility and ended up making NOM look hypocritical. From nomexposed.org:

In the Washington Post story  . . .  Brown says, “The only poll that counts is a free and fair vote on the part of the people.” (We probably won’t let Brown or the media forget this statement.) He said this in reaction to the Post poll showing a slim majority of Americans support the freedom of loving, committed couples to marry.

Three hours later on the NOM blog at 11:10am, the organization decides to cite three polls opposing to marriage.  The post, “Recent Polls Showing Strong Majorities Oppose SSM,” ticks off:

2010 CNN National Exit Poll – Americans oppose SSM 54% to 40%

August 2010 Fox News Poll – only 37% support SSM given choice between SSM/CU/no recognition
August 2010 Public Policy Institute Poll – 33% favor SSM while 57% oppose it

But I thought the “only poll that counts is a free and fair vote on the part of the people?”

Yep, these folks are scared.

Scared, ignorant and liars. Not one of the NOMers dared to sit as a witness in the Prop 8 trial even though they financed the bulk of it. They wouldn't purjor themselves in court, but they love to spread viscious lies in an "election". That's why they always want to get the issue on a ballot, so they can run their buses to their churches and get out the bigot vote.

And what does this say, coming right on the heels of Brian Brown's insistence that the American people haven't changed their minds on same-sex marriage and Maggie's insistence that the (pick-and-choose) polls show no such thing:

"Have I hinted that the growth of support for gay marriage over the past few years tells us more about the tendency of people to espouse fashionable ideas than about any significant moral shift?"

So is there growing support for same-sex marriage, or isn't there? They're spinning so fast they don't know what direction they're supposed to be facing.

Meanwhile, NOM is opposed to civil unions or any other kind of legal recognition or protections for same-sex couples, even though the ONLY polls that they can cite showing strong opposition to full marriage equality offer civil unions as an option. When you include civil unions, the polls show very clearly that Americans want to give same-sex couples SOMETHING, even if they can't agree on exactly what that something should be. Ironically, by opposing even civil unions NOM and their allies are the ones forcing Americans to choose between something and nothing, with no middle ground; they're the ones driving Americans to support same-sex marriage because with no other options, Americans are increasingly agreeing on what that something should be: full marriage rights.

Heterosexual people do not marry gay people. So why do these ignorant people think that allowing gay marriage will destroy heterosexual marriage. Is Brian Brown afraid that legal gay marriage make him marry a man?

I am a heterosexual man with a wife and children. I have some gay neighbors who are excellent neighbors and friends. Neither me nor my wife have any desire to marry our gay friends.

They only way one of my gay neighbors could destroy my marriage would be if I became gay and had an extramarital affair with him. Since I am not gay that will never happen. So how will my neighbors gay marriage destroy my marriage.

These people in the National Organization for Marriage must be questioning their sexuality. True heterosexuals do not have sex with homosexuals.

If NOM members believe that gay marriage will make them start leaving their wives to have sex with men, then NOM members must be closeted homosexuals who are marrying women to hide the fact that they are closeted homosexuals.
